Songs My Mother Taught Me
2025 - 2026
Songs My Mother Taught Me is a meditation on memory, identity, and the enduring resonance of maternal love, woven through a tapestry of visual expression. Each work draws breath from lullabies, folk songs, and intimate melodies—sonic heirlooms carried across generations.
Charcoal and wax pastel unfold in muted, near-monochromatic tones, drifting across sheets of music. Their forms cradle the echo of a distant refrain. Layered patterns and delicate gestures trace the shifting terrain of remembrance: some passages crystalline in their clarity, others dissolving like melodies half-remembered yet deeply felt.
More than an artistic endeavour, this series is an ode to maternal legacies, an invitation to rediscover the songs that shaped us. It beckons the audience to listen - to the lessons sung in childhood, to the harmonies that time never fully erases, to the music still humming softly in the background of our lives.

As a side note: The series title Songs My Mother Taught Me draws inspiration from Antonín Dvořák’s 1880 composition for voice and piano, the fourth piece in his Gypsy Songs, Op. 55, set to poetry by Adolf Heyduk in both Czech and German.
