Ex Materia (Transfiguration)

2022 - 2023

A branch of the Ex Materia (2021-2023) series these wall-based, pictorial sculptures are comprised of hypnotic patterns and motifs that draw upon organic imagery. The works are configured in a play of mirrored compositional constructs that form kaleidoscopic patterns and uniform systems of reference. Inspired by proto-theology as well as primitive mythology this body of work - in vibrant hues of radiant colours - presents a dynamic visual chronicle that draws upon the ideas of beauty, harmony, balance and symmetry in nature.

Each work, drawn from a singular motif, is subsequently dissected into four separate quadrants or multiple triangular parts, which allow the work to be displayed and arranged in a myriad of hanging compositions. And, with each new construct the viewer is introduced to an infinite amount of visual impressions that inevitably lead to multiple cognitive interpretations. Thus, with each permutation the viewer is presented with new visual and psychological codes to decipher.

As a side note: The series title refers to the theological doctrine of “creatio ex materia”. Biblical references proclaim that the creation of new matter is based upon the process of transforming something that already exists into something with a new shape or a new purpose. The opposing view is “creatio ex nihilo” (Latin for “out of nothing”), which is the doctrine that matter is not eternal but had to be created by some divine creative act. These two contrary myths of creation allude to the process through which the world is centred and given a definite form within the whole of reality.
