Glory Box

2023

Drawing inspiration from the concept of Pandora's box, Glory Box and it’s cornucopia of works explore the themes of temptation, consequences as well as the irresistible allure of curiosity. Conceived as a serial in four parts (Illumina, Oceania, Spectral Serenade, and Neuterra), each work within this series of ‘sub-titles’ display ravelled compositions, reminiscent of the forbidden box itself.

Temptation, a pivotal aspect of Pandora's box, is visually manifested in this series through the use of vivid colours and abstract compositions by inviting the viewer to delve into the intricate layers of the textile medium. Blending hues of rich reds, seductive purples, and mystifying blues, each construct attempts to entice the viewer's gaze. The tactile qualities of the textiles further enhance this allure, with intricate patterns and raised surfaces that beckon the viewer to touch and explore.

This series aims to expand the scope of painted textile art by employing dynamic compositions and juxtapositions to convey the complex emotions and themes of the Pandora myth, whilst embracing the unknown. One of the underlying messages within Glory Box is the acknowledgment of the unknown. By incorporating partially concealed figures and earthly symbols encourage viewers to contemplate the hidden aspects of Pandora's box.

As a side note: Hesiod's Pandora's Box is a mythological story that warns about the consequences of curiosity and the presence of suffering in the world. In the tale, Pandora, the first woman created by the gods, was given a box (or jar) containing all the evils that could afflict humanity. Despite being warned not to open it, Pandora's curiosity prevailed, and she unleashed sickness, sorrow, greed, and other afflictions upon the world. Only hope remained trapped inside the jar.

The story serves as a moral lesson, cautioning against the dangers of unchecked curiosity and impulsive actions. It teaches the importance of self-control and restraint. Despite the troubles released, the presence of hope symbolises the resilience of the human spirit and the belief that better things can arise even in the face of adversity. Hesiod's Pandora's Box reminds us to be mindful of our choices and the consequences they may bring, while also acknowledging the enduring presence of hope as a guiding light in difficult times.
